A Bindi That Asked for Help

Purpose platform · Product innovation · Community intervention

Concept · Product & Service

A culturally embedded safety system that transformed the everyday bindi into a discreet communication tool, allowing women to signal domestic violence, dowry pressure or health concerns to trained NGO workers without placing themselves at greater risk.

In shortThe everyday bindi as a safety signalA discreet domestic-violence alertHelp hidden in plain sight

01 / The business problem

For women facing domestic violence, dowry pressure or sensitive health concerns, asking for help openly can increase risk. The challenge was to create a discreet signal that could work inside everyday life, without forcing a woman to explain her situation in public.

02 / The way in

Turn the bindi, an intimate and culturally familiar object, into a silent code. Different colours and forms could help a woman indicate the kind of support she needed to a trained NGO worker, creating a discreet bridge between recognition and response.

03 / What we did

I developed the strategic concept and intervention system around a colour-coded bindi kit, a trained-NGO response guide and a confidential response protocol. The work connected product design, cultural insight and community training so the idea did not stop at symbolism: the signal had a defined receiver, interpretation and next step.

05 / Strategic outcome

A culturally embedded product-service system designed to make asking for help safer, quieter and more actionable
